Large (Bulky) Items
New Way to Schedule Large Item Collection Coming Soon!
Beginning January 2026, large item collection in Newmarket will become a scheduled service, similar to appliances and other large metal items. With the Town no longer collecting recycling due to the Province's transition of the recycling program to producers, there will be some adjustments to how other waste streams (garbage, organics, and large items) are collected.
Instead of recycling and organics being co-collected on the same collection vehicle, residents will see co-collection of organics and garbage (separated into separate compartments in the same truck). To improve operational efficiencies, large item collection will now be handled by a dedicated collection vehicle, streamlining pick-ups for residents.
How it WorksTo schedule a large item pick-up, residents will need to:
- Purchase a large item tag.
- Call GFL (Green for Life) at 1-866-421-5625 to schedule your collection.
Additional Reminders- Large items will not be collected unless a special pick-up has been booked.
- Residents may call GFL in advance to schedule a large item pick-up. However, to have items collected on your regular garbage day, requests must be received no later than 11:00 a.m. on Monday of your garbage week. Requests received after this time cannot be guaranteed for collection that week and will otherwise be scheduled for your next regular garbage collection day.
- There is a five-item limit per collection.
- Each item requires a large item tag.
- Please disassemble and bundle large heavy items so that they are manageable for collection.
- For safety reasons, large items that contain glass (e.g. table tops, curio cabinets, etc.) must have the glass removed as this material is not accepted in the curbside collection program. Large mirrors are also not accepted. Large mirrors and large amounts of glass can be taken to select York Region Waste Depots for disposal (disposal fees apply).
When Does this Start?Scheduled large item collection will begin the first full week of January 2026 (the week of January 5). Residents who need a pick-up that week can start calling GFL as early as December 29, 2025, to schedule their collection.
Until then, please continue to use the current large item collection program as usual.
What is a Large Item?Large, oversized items are anything that is too large to fit within an approved garbage container. These items include furniture (e.g., tables, chairs, couches, desks), mattresses and box springs.
