Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)

Items that are corrosive, explosive, poisonous, or flammable are considered Household Hazardous Waste (HHW). HHW includes paints, motor oil and oil filters, propane tanks, household cleaners and detergents, pharmaceuticals and prescription medicines, and fluorescent tubes and energy efficient bulbs.

HHW must not be placed in the garbage or blue box, and must not be poured down the drain. Improper disposal of HHW can have negative effects on our environment and can be harmful to humans and animals. Whenever possible, try using non-hazardous alternatives instead.

Household Hazardous Waste can be disposed of at select York Region Waste Depots. For more information, please refer to York Region's HHW program by visiting York.ca/hhw or calling 1-866-665-6752.

Electronic Waste (E-waste)

Electronic waste (e-waste) items such as televisions, computers, cameras, video game consoles, printers, and DVD players are not collected through regular curbside pick-up and do not belong in the garbage or blue box. E-waste items contain valuable resources and hazardous materials that need to be recycled, reused, or disposed of responsibly.

E-waste items can be dropped off at select York Region Waste Depots for proper disposal. For more information, including a list of accepted items and item limits, visit York Region's website.

Reminders:

  • Protect your privacy. Clear all personal data from e-waste items prior to dropping them off.

  • Remove all packaging and batteries.
