As of November 14, 2025, the Town of Newmarket’s Automated Speed Program will end due to the Ontario Government passing Bill 56 that will end the use of speed cameras across the province. Newmarket remains dedicated to promoting road safety for all residents and visitors and will follow all provincial requirements.
Tickets issued on or before November 13, 2025, are still valid. Anyone who has received a ticket with an issue date on or before November 13 must pay or appeal it by the date shown on the ticket. Some valid tickets issued on or before November 13 may be delivered after November 14 due to processing times; however, it is still the responsibility of the vehicle owner to pay or appeal their ticket at: newmarket.ca/communitysafetycameras.
At this time, no decision has been made by Council to remove the speed cameras as they temporarily remain in place to collect speed data to guide future safety measures. New larger signage, as directed by the province, will be installed near areas where speed cameras were present as part of the new legislation
Newmarket believes that Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) remains an effective speed mitigation and safety tool that Newmarket has. Since the start of the program, Newmarket has seen a:
- 73 per cent reduction in the number of vehicles travelling above the posted speed limit in community safety zones with Community Safety Cameras, and
- 23 per cent reduction in average vehicle speeds in community safety zones with Community Safety Cameras (from 47 km/hr down to 37 km/hr) where the speed limit is 40km/hr.
The Town will continue to support other traffic safety initiatives to ensure safe streets in the community.
