  • Flags fly at half-mast in Newmarket to honour the life of the Honourable Murray Sinclair

    Created: Friday, November 08, 2024

Flags at Town of Newmarket and Central York Fire Services' facilities have been lowered to half-mast to honour the life of the Honourable Murray Sinclair, C.C., O.M., M.S.C., K.C. who passed away on November 4, 2024 at the age of 73.

Sinclair was a dedicated champion for the rights of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. He was Manitoba’s first Indigenous judge and the second in Canada and a former Senator. As Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Sinclair led hundreds of hearings across the country and listened to the testimonies of thousands of residential school survivors, bringing national attention to the lasting impacts of the residential school system on Indigenous communities.

The Town of Newmarket, Mayor and Members of Council would like to extend condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and to the Indigenous Peoples and communities across Turtle Island.

In memory of the Honourable Murray Sinclar, the Town of Newmarket remains strongly committed to our journey towards Truth and Reconciliation.

Flags will remain at half-mast until sunset on November 10.
