For three decades, the Newmarket Seniors’ Meeting Place (NSMP) located at 474 Davis Drive, has been a cornerstone of the community offering adults 55 and up a place to forge new friendships, stay active, learn and enjoy programs. The Town welcomes members, family, and friends to celebrate the occasion with an Anniversary Tea and more upcoming events.
“Congratulations to the Newmarket Seniors’ Meeting Place on this milestone occasion,” says Mayor John Taylor. “This centre plays a crucial role in the well-being and quality of life for many in the community and I’m proud to see how it’s grown over the years. I encourage anyone who is interested in learning more to visit and experience the sense of community for themselves.”
The NSMP is located at 474 Davis Drive, with easy access to local transit and trails. In its 30-year history it has grown to offer:
More than 40 drop-in programs and activities per week offering a mix of social, physical, educational, and health-related programs
Monthly bus trips to beautiful nearby destinations
Special events with lively music, games, trivia and more
Specialized activities, including the woodshop and wood carving room, where participants can take advantage of a wide variety of machines, including lathe, table saw, drill press, jointer, bevel mitre saw, band saw, and more.
Here’s what three members of the Newmarket’s Seniors’ Meeting Place have to say about their experience:
“I love working on the reception desk and helping with some of the social functions. The members are grateful to have such a wonderful facility to meet for camaraderie.” - Lorraine Thivierge, NSMP Member and Volunteer.
“When I retired, NSMP became an awesome place to meet new people. Had I realized that they welcomed people aged 55 and over, and that I didn’t have to be retired to participate, I would have joined sooner. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming when I went in to check the place out, I felt like I’d come home! The programs, keep me active and I look forward to them each week. After joining, my perspective on getting older and my energy level improved, prompting my husband to also join! I credit our membership at NSMP with our continued good health and joie de vivre!” - Janet Murphy, NSMP Member and Volunteer.
“Joining the NSMP offers numerous benefits such as opportunities for social engagement. It has allowed me to meet and make many new friends over the years. Volunteering at the centre adds an extra layer of fulfillment, as it allows me to contribute my skills and experiences, giving me a sense of purpose and connection within the community. The many different activities provide me an opportunity to stay physical and keep moving forward.” - Carol Edwards, NSMP Member and Volunteer
