Congratulations, you're Getting Married!

To make it legal you'll need an Ontario Marriage Licence before your marriage ceremony. You can purchase your marriage licence from the Town of Newmarket or any other municipality within Ontario that is authorized to issue licences. The licence is only for use within Ontario and must be used within three (3) months of the issue date.

To get your Marriage Licence you'll need to complete a copy of the marriage licence application form. Please ensure the form has original signatures by both applicants.

Appointment Checklist:

  1. Completed application signed in pen by both applicants.
  2. Two (2) non-expired, original pieces of government-issued identification for both applicants. One piece must include a photo and both pieces must show applicant's full names and birth dates.
    • Examples of government-issued identification include:
      • Birth certificate, including any change of name certificates
      • Passport
      • Record of immigrant landing
      • Canadian Citizenship Card or Certificate
      • Driver's licence
      • Ontario Photo Card

If the identification is not in English or French, a certified translated copy will be required by a certified translator.

  1. If previously married, an original or court-certified copy of the decree absolute or an original Certificate of Divorce is required. Divorce judgements and orders are not acceptable, nor are photocopies.

If the divorce occurred outside of Canada, a Foreign Divorce Authorization is required.

  1. Payment – Payment is due at the beginning of your in-person appointment and can be made by Interac, Visa, Mastercard or American Express.

    Fees:
    • Residents of Newmarket: $163.91
    • Non-Residents: $180.30

Your appointment will take approximately 30 – 45 minutes.

The applicant(s) being issued the licence must understand, speak and read English, or otherwise be accompanied by an interpreter which may be a friend or family member, so long as they are able to translate effectively. It is the applicant's responsibility to bring an interpreter to the in-person appointment.
