Newmarket to begin watermain cleaning in various neighbourhoods this September

    Created: Monday, August 25, 2025

To continue to ensure the highest quality of water, the Town of Newmarket will begin its annual watermain cleaning program during the week of September 8, 2025 in various parts of Town. This work will take place for approximately 12 weeks. See the map below for more information.

Some early work to prepare for the cleaning started on August 2. This work may result in periodic discolouration of the water as the Town cleans away iron or sediment that has built up inside the watermain. This work may also result in periodic disruption to the water system.

The Town will be using a variety of techniques, including watermain swabbing, to do a thorough cleaning. Watermain swabbing involves inserting a foam sponge, or 'swab’, into the watermain through a fire hydrant at one end of a street. The diameter of the swab is slightly larger than the watermain, and it is pushed through the watermain using water pressure. As the swab travels through the watermain, it scrubs away iron and sediment that has built up and is pushed up and out of a fire hydrant at the other end of the street.

The Town will do its best to reduce impacts on Newmarket residents and businesses; however, during the cleaning process, some residents' water usage will be impacted for a short period of time. Residents in the affected households will be notified at least 24 hours in advance that watermain cleaning will be taking place on their street and will be provided with further information on what to expect and any actions to take.

The Town of Newmarket would like to thank residents and businesses for their continued support, cooperation and patience throughout this cleaning program. Investing in the provision of safe drinking water is a top priority for the Town.

For more information, read the Water Main Cleaning Program Frequently Asked Questions, or review a map of the affected area. To speak with someone directly about any issues you're having with your water and/or throughout this process, please call 905-895-5193.
