  • Queen Street Bridge will be closed from early-to-mid-March to December 2025 for Rehabilitation

    Created: Tuesday, February 18, 2025

Queen Street Bridge between Main Street South and Prospect Street will be closed from early-to-mid-March until December 2025 as part of the Queen Street Bridge Rehabilitation Project. This project involves a full closure to pedestrians and vehicles for the duration of the project. The Town of Newmarket is asking the public to review the detour map, plan ahead and prepare for the closure.

As a reminder, the rehabilitation of the Queen Street Bridge was identified after regulatory structural inspections of the bridge determined that the bridge superstructure required replacement. Work on the Queen Street Bridge Rehabilitation Project began in 2023, with Phase 1 focused on utility relocation work by Bell Canada, completed in 2024.

Once completed, work on the bridge will:

    • Improve safety and accessibility for all users
    • Enhance infrastructure durability and longevity
    • Minimize on-going and long-term maintenance needs

    What can the public expect?

    • February 2025: Pre-construction work will be undertaken by the Town’s contractor, Alliance Verdi Civil Inc. Work includes the installation of traffic signage, site trailer and environmental protection measures.

    • Early/Mid-March 2025: A full road closure on Queen Street from Main Street South to Prospect Street will be in effect from early-to-mid-March 2025 for the entire duration of the project.

      • The contractor is currently working on securing a permit from Metrolinx to start the work. While the permit approval is underway, the Town anticipates a closure of Queen Street in early-to-mid-March 2025. Once a date has been confirmed, the public, businesses and residents will be notified.

    • Access to businesses and residential areas:

      • Access to businesses and residences will be remain open during the road closures.

      • Properties west of the bridge: Access via Main Street South.

      • Properties east of the bridge: Access via Prospect Street.

      • Emergency vehicle access will always be maintained.

    • Typical working hours: Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with occasional weekend and night work as needed.

      • Residents and businesses in the area may experience dust, noise, and minor vibrations during construction. Newmarket and Alliance Verdi Civil Inc. will take measures to minimize these inconveniences.

      • Residents will be notified of any temporary restrictions, such as curb, driveway, or sidewalk repairs.

The Town of Newmarket is committed to maintaining safe and reliable infrastructure for our residents. As part of this commitment, we are moving forward with the rehabilitation of the Queen Street Bridge over the railway, ensuring a stronger and more resilient connection for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles.
