Candidate Nomination Period for the 2022 Newmarket Election Opens May 2

    Created: Wednesday, April 27, 2022

Prospective candidates who want to run for office in the 2022 Town of Newmarket municipal election can file their nominations beginning May 2, 2022.  The nomination period will remain open until August 19, 2022 at 2 p.m. Registration for third party advertisers also opens on May 2, 2022. This year, during a 10-day voting period from October 15 to October 24, Newmarket electors will vote to elect one Mayor, one Deputy Mayor and Regional Councillor, seven Councillors – each representing one of Newmarket's seven wards, and one school board trustee for each of the four school boards serving Newmarket.

People wishing to run for any of these public offices, except for trustee of a French language school board, must schedule an appointment with the Town of Newmarket election office during the nomination period to file their nominations and submit required documents. Prospective candidates can schedule their nomination meeting by contacting the Town of Newmarket election office at (905) 953-5300 ext. 2210 or by email at elections@newmarket.ca.  Meetings can be arranged to take place in-person at the Town of Newmarket Municipal Office (395 Mulock Drive), or online using a new secure nomination submission platform.

Trustee elections for the regional French public school board, Conseil scolaire Viamonde, and the French Catholic school board, Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir are being administered through the City of Vaughan. Anyone interested in running for these positions should contact elections@vaughan.ca or visit vaughan.ca/elections.

In Ontario, municipalities, including the Town of Newmarket, are responsible for conducting elections for their council and to regional school boards. The Province of Ontario establishes election rules and procedures for municipal elections that determine most candidate nomination and registration requirements. These include candidate eligibility, campaign spending and dates of the candidate nomination period and the election itself. The Town of Newmarket establishes some rules and procedures, including election sign policies and voting procedures.

Town of Newmarket will post the names of registered candidates on the election website at www.newmarketvotes.ca within one business day of their registration. The running list will be updated regularly through the nomination period.

More information for those thinking of running in the 2022 Town of Newmarket municipal election, including candidate qualifications and requirements for filing nominations, as well as information for third party advertisers, is available on the election website at newmarketvotes.ca.
